Motown the Musical is a crowd pleasing journey through the creation of Motown Records with a non-stop parade of the enormous number of hit songs that founder Berry Gordy released. The national tour of the Broadway production has come to Tempe for a week long run and the show, though it does have its shortcomings, has an exceptional cast that brings over 50 well-known songs to vibrant life. Motown the Musical, now on tour at Washington's National Theatre, is not a musical in the traditional sense as much as a pageant showing off some of the brightest jewels from the Motown catalog.Based on the audience response, with people humming along and even singing along at times with the familiar tunes, the question of where it fits is not an issue.

Heavyweights like Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson were hardly featured and they were major players for Motown. I seen better Motown shows at my local theatre and a lot of the songs were truncated. It could have been a lot better.
